Bishop's Stortford Amateur Radio Society

History of the society

The earliest records that we have suggest that the society was formed around August 1967. It was known at that time as The Bishop's Stortford and District Amateur Radio Society. We do have a list of the ten founder members. Unfortunately none of these are members now but at least two still live locally.

Until 2007, the society always met at the Royal British Legion in Windhill, Bishop's Stortford.

The president in those early days was Sir Roger P. Hawkey B.A.R.T., G5ZG. We do not have a record of the date that Sir Roger passed away but one of the members, Bernard Salt, G4ITL, managed to acquire the G5ZG callsign for the society. This was around 1983 and we have been proud to use this distinctive two-letter callsign during contests and special events ever since.

Several years ago the society was renamed The Bishop's Stortford Amateur Radio Society.
